Medical School and the Process of Gaining Acceptance

The process in choosing a medical school as well as the selection criteria and academic criteria in getting accepted into medical school will be covered in this medical summer school course. Although the selection and acceptance into UK University Medical Schools are similar, particular attention is given to the process involved in applying for and gaining entry into the "top" UK Medical Schools.

How to Approach UKCAT and BMAT

The United Kingdom Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) is required by most medical schools in the UK, be it for undergraduate or post-graduate admission. In our experience, the right practice and preparation can make a big difference to your test score.

Our medical summer school course includes tuition on each of the five components of the UKCAT test: verbal reasoning, quantitative analysis, abstract reasoning, decision analysis, and situational judgement. For each component, you are taught various methods and techniques (and tips and tricks) for arriving at the correct answers. You are then given a large number of mock questions on which to practice what you have learnt, with the tutors constantly on hand to iron out any remaining weaknesses.

The BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) is especially challenging, and so presents well-prepared candidates with an ideal opportunity to stand out from the competition. It is a crucial component of the selection process at the medical schools that require it.

Our medical summer school course covers all areas examined, including problem solving, understanding argument, data analysis and inference, scientific knowledge, and essay writing. The tutors aim to cover as much material as possible, and to illustrate theory with worked-through BMAT-style questions.

At the end, you are given a full-length mock test under exam conditions. This enables you both to get a good feel for the test and to pinpoint any remaining areas of difficulty.

How to Write a Personal Statement

Understand the anatomy and what to include in your personal statement to make it “stand out”.

A personal statement as its name implies should be individual and by working first in groups and then one to one with our medical tutors who have been through this and can pass to you their first hand knowledge you will be asked to produce your own personal statement. Questions such as “What have you done in your spare time to further your path into becoming a doctor?” , “Why do you want to study medicine ?” and many more will be discussed in tutorials where you will gain the confidence and get “ideas” from your tutors and peers and be surrounded and supported by like minded students.

The Daunting Interview Process and How to Gain Confidence and Answer Questions

The taught part of the workshop covers background information and interview theory, including types of questions asked and how best to tackle them. You are then given a full-length mock interview followed by detailed feedback on your performance, with due attention paid to body language and ‘paralanguage’.

As the mock interviews are carried out in small groups of four to five, you are able to experience a full range of question types, build up your confidence, and learn from the strengths and weaknesses of your peers.

You will work together in small groups to learn essential knowledge, techniques and build confidence.

medical school field visit summer school

Learning objectives

Breakfast and lunch is served and eaten in the College dining hall, which provides a bright and comfortable space for communal meals. Students will enjoy a varied and healthy diet: all meals are freshly prepared and special diets can be catered for with advance notice. A three-course dinner is provided daily either in the College dining hall, or in various restaurants as part of the social programme.

Safety and Security on Campus

Students will be overseen by our course leaders and residential staff to classes and activities, who ensure that students are looked after pastorally and socially during their summer school programme and are available to assist students at any time of the day or night.

All students will be issued with emergency contact details for staff members and will be given a full safety briefing on arrival.

Management Team

Our Management team is headed by the College Principal, who takes responsibility for the daily running of the summer school, and supervises the Academic Programme. The Social & Welfare Manager takes charge of the summer school Social Programme and is supported by a team of College Mentors, who ensure everyone is happy, safe and having fun.

Working together, our Managers ensure that every aspect of the summer school runs smoothly, safely and offers every student the chance to participate fully.

College Mentors

Our Mentors are key members of staff who support and assist our students within the college accommodation and throughout the summer school social programme.
